A fire broke out in a seventh-floor unit of the Lawrence House Retirment Hotel around 3 p.m. Tuesday, injuring a man who was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The cause of the fire is still under invesstigation.
Residents of Lawrence House told Lake Effect News that the building’s fire alarm system was not working, which was also confirmed by CFD officials.
Ald. Helen Shiller (46th) arrived on the scene. Asked if she was aware that building’s fire alarm system was not working, Shiller replied, “I’m still finding out what’s going on.”
About 23 pieces of firefighting equipment were brought in to battle the blaze that was contained to one unit. The fire was struck at 3:20 p.m.
