Porfirio Balderas, owner of That Little Mexican Cafe, 1055 W. Bryn Mawr, treated more than 300 Edgewater residents to a Thanksgiving feast who would otherwise go without a meal this holiday.
Porfirio and Hilary Balderas know a little bit about uncertainty and hard times. They know what it’s like to open a new restaurant and serve only a few meals a day. Grateful that that’s all behind them, the Balderases opened the doors to their Edgewater restaurant and invited their “family” to Thanksgiving dinner.
For the past four Thanksgivings, the couple and their staff at That Little Mexican Café at 1055 W. Bryn Mawr have given up their own holiday to prepare and serve dinners for neighborhood residents who might otherwise go without a holiday meal.. Staff arrived at 5 a.m. Thanksgiving to start the turkeys roasting and polishing the silverware.
The Balderases pick up the entire cost of the dinner. Edgewater social service organizations, block clubs, churches and synagogues provide the guests. More than 300 Edgewater residents enjoyed hot turkey, ham, roast beef, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a steamed vegetable medley, cornbread stuffing, two kinds of pie and ice cream.
So the next time you’re looking for a place to have lunch or dinner, check out That Little Mexican Cafe. The food is superb and so are the owners and staff.
